The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is the country's premier national Institute for agricultural research, education and extension. It has served the cause of science and society with distinction through first rate research, generation of appropriate technologies and development of human resources. The Institute has all along been adjusting and improving its policies, plans and programmes to effectively respond to the needs and opportunities of the nation. The Institute was the first to operationalize research, education and extension on the pattern of Land Grant Colin System of USA. The Institute launched M.Sc. and PhD programmes in various agricultural disciplines after it was declared as first deemed to be agricultural University by UGC in 1958. Since then it has acted as a centre of excellence in imparting agricultural education and training to many researchers in India and from more than 30 countries. At present, the Institute offers M.Sc./M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in the disciplines of Agricultural Chemicals, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, (M.Tech./Ph.D.), Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Physics, Agricultural Statistics, Agronomy, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Computer Application, Entomology, Environmental Sciences,Post Harvest Technology,(M.Sc./M.Tech./Ph.D),Genetics, Horticulture, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Nematology, Plant Genetic Resources, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Seed Science and Technology, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry and Water Science and Technology.

Students of the Institute are provided with residential facilities in six hostels. All hostels are well equipped with modern facilities including 24X7 Internet access through Wi-Fi connectivity. In addition, students are motivated to participate in extracurricular activities such as debates, scientific meetings and recreational pursuits. Till February 2016, 4583 Ph.D., 3780 M.Sc. and 32 M.Tech. students received their degrees, out of which 365 students were from foreign countries. The Institute has a Central Library facility and is the de-facto National Library in Agricultural Sciences, where both online and offline journals/literature in  various  disciplines of agricultural sciences are available. The contribution of IARI towards human resource development for national and international agricultural research is unparalleled. The alumni of this Institute hold senior positions in various establishments globally.

The admission policy is decided every year in the month of March / April by the Academic Council well before the starting of the Academic year. It is possible that in a particular academic year there may not be admission in some disciplines, depending upon the availability of Faculty and other facilities.
