Our International Students

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute has a long record of excellence in higher education and training in Agricultural Sciences. Right from its inception in 1905, this institute has been developing trained manpower for the country. In the beginning, it played an important role in training the senior officers of the then provincial Departments of Agriculture. High demand for such training led to the starting of formal training courses leading to a two years Diploma of Associateship of IARI in 1923. Up to 1957, 903 scientists were awarded Associateship of IARI in various fields of agriculture. The Associateship of IARI was recognized as equivalent to the M.Sc. degree of Indian Universities by the Ministry of Education in 1949.
In 1958, the University Grants Commission accorded the status of a Deemed University to the Institute so that the postgraduate teaching leading to the degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. could be started. The foundation of the postgraduate School of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute was laid in October, 1958 by Shri A.P. Jain, the then Minister of Food and Agriculture. Under the guidance of Dr. R.W. Cummings, the first Dean of Post Graduate School of IARI, the post graduate instructions were started in six disciplines viz. Agronomy, Entomology, Genetics, Horticulture, Mycology & Plant Pathology, and Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, modeled on the course credit systems of the Land Grant Colleges of the USA. Today the Institute has teaching programs leading to M.Sc./M.Tech. and Ph.D. degree in 26 disciplines.
Indian Agricultural Research Institute has played a pivotal role in transforming Indian Agriculture by providing the country with highly trained manpower for agricultural research, teaching and extension. The IARI alumni who have helped in improving the agricultural production from merely 55 million tonnes in 1949-50 to 259 million tonnes today are spear heading the agricultural research education and extension programmes, not only in India but also in other Countries. Till February 2021, 5079 Ph.D; 4444 M.Sc. and 72 M.Tech. students received their degrees, which includes 487 international students.
IARI conducts Post Graduate Courses leading to the award of M.Sc./M.Tech. & Ph.D. degrees in the following agricultural disciplines:
