Students of IARI have taken the lion’s share of scientist positions in different disciplines advertised by the Agricultural Recruitment Board (ASRB) since its inception. This reflects the standard of teaching and education in basic science and agricultural sciences. Most of the students aspire to scientific positions in ICAR and many other national institutes in India and abroad. A considerable number of students prefer to join state agricultural universities across India and private sectors.

To support the development of agripreneurship among IARI students and its hub, the academic council of IARI has approved two courses -Foundational Entrepreneurship Development (compulsory for UG Third Year Sem-I) and Entrepreneurship Opportunity Analyses and Strategy (for UG Third Year Sem-II/PG and PhD Students). The Zonal Technology Management and Business Plan Development (ZTM &BPD) unit of IARI caters to the needs of external start-ups. ZTM & BPD will incubate UG, PG and PhD students for internship programs and transform their bright ideas into start-ups to fulfil the objective of the ICAR-IARI Student-Start-up Scheme.
Under the policy directives of NEP 2020, graduate programs are being revised to adopt a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are encouraged to identify any gaps in various fields and involve experts who hold leadership positions in those areas. Professors of Practice (PoP) may share their expertise with students and are invited to teach students. These experts can be engaged as PoPs, and their knowledge and experience can be leveraged for the benefit of students. A Committee has been constituted, chaired by the Dean and Joint Director (Education) to appoint PoP at IARI, New Delhi.
An online session for the Reliance Foundation Scholarship (RFS) was conducted on 30th October 2024 for first-year undergraduate/Post Graduate students of IARI and its hubs to encourage the students to compete for the RFS. Three students from IARI and its hubs: two for BSc (Agri) Hons, and one for B.Tech (Biotechnology), were selected for the scholarships.
IARI offers internships to students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in agriculture and related fields. Students who have joined the UG program will get the opportunity to an internship in private as well as government institutions in India. Internships provide students with hands-on experience in research and development activities at the institute. Students can gain valuable knowledge and skills by working on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced scientists.

Pusa Krishi and The Graduate School, ICAR-IARI, jointly organised an engaging bootcamp for IARI students on May 2, 2025, in the Agricultural Engineering Auditorium, IARI, to introduce them to its flagship incubation programs, UPJA and ARISE. Dr. Anupama Singh, Joint Director (Education) and Dean, IARI, chaired the session. The program offers grant-in-aid support of ₹25 lakhs, ₹5 lakhs and a newly launched ₹4 lakh grant tailored for student-led innovations. Pusa Krishi Team addressed the students and emphasised the importance of nurturing research-based entrepreneurship in agriculture. They highlighted that the government has introduced the ₹4 lakh grant to support students in advancing their research, technology validation and commercialisation efforts. The session offered practical guidance on how students can turn their agricultural ideas into successful ventures.
Of 1212 students, including UG, PG, and PhD students from first year to fifth year, only 122 opted for agripreneurship. Of these, 41 were UG students, 29 were PG students, and 52 were Ph.D. students. The details of the responses on career preferences are depicted in graphical form.
