The Division of Environmental Sciences was established on 10^th January, 1993 to conduct research on GHG emissions and climate change issues in agriculture with the backdrop of 1991 IPCC Special Report, in which India was blamed for the excessive methane emission (37.5 MT) from paddy cultivation. In view of growing environmental concerns and to conduct basic, applied, anticipatory, strategic and policy research on the environmental issues, the Division of Environmental Sciences has a mission to advance the understanding of environmental processes and develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges in agroecosystems. Our vision has always been to lead the way in environmental research, focusing on climate change, sustainable development, simulation modelling, environmental pollution, create wealth from waste as well as enhancement of agro-ecosystem services.

The Division of Environmental Sciences deploys multidisciplinary approach to decipher and identify solutions for current and future environmental challenges. A group of 15 scientists belonging to 7 different disciplines are working in this division with a mission to develop and disseminate low-cost, easy to adopt eco-friendly technologies for climate-resilient sustainable green agriculture.
